A complete guide to the IRATA rope access course
With the right training and experience, rope access technicians can expect to find work in a variety of settings and earn competitive salaries. Although there are several training providers worldwide, the IRATA rope access course is the most widely accepted and highly regarded qualification for those seeking to enter the industry.
In this blog post, we will discuss what the IRATA rope access course is, as well as the benefits of obtaining this certification.
What is the IRATA rope access course?
The IRATA rope access course teaches delegates the skills and knowledge needed to work at heights using ropes and associated equipment. This training teaches delegates methods and techniques of how to gain access to and from a work position, as well as how to support themselves at height.
The course is delivered by the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association International, which is recognised as the world’s leading authority on industrial rope access. It has over 700 member companies around the world and has trained more than 130,000 rope access technicians worldwide.
The certification is benchmarked as the highest standard qualification for rope access due to IRATA’s established values of safety, quality and working practices for the industry.
The training is divided into three levels, which technicians can progress through as time, experience, and training allow. Each level requires a greater understanding of the rope access skills required on the worksite site. We have provided further information on each course below.
The beginner’s course provides the fundamental knowledge and skills required to enter the rope access industry. The syllabus covers the theoretical side of rope access, equipment and rigging exercises, rope access and climbing manoeuvres, and rescue and hauling exercises.
Technicians who complete this course will understand how to safely use and inspect rope access equipment, as well as have the capability to perform a range of activities under the supervision of an IRATA Rope Access Level 3 Safety Supervisor.
Candidates must be 18 or older, physically and medically fit, as well as have the capacity and desire for Work at Height environments.
The level two course is an intermediate scheme designed for experienced candidates. The syllabus provides more in-depth theoretical knowledge of rope access, including the safe use of equipment and techniques. This includes legislation, risk assessments, and method statements. There will also be practical sessions where you will learn how to correctly apply rigging techniques and knots, as well as how to safely and effectively carry out a variety of rope access manoeuvres.
This course will teach delegates how to rig working ropes, conduct rescues, and perform advanced rope access tasks under the supervision of an IRATA Level 3 technician.
Candidates must have at least 12 months of experience and 1000 working hours as an IRATA-certified Level 1 technician.
IRATA Rope Access – Level 3 (Safety Supervisor)
Level 3 provides advanced training for Safety Supervisors on rope access sites. The syllabus covers the IRATA code of practice, risk assessments, method statements, and worksite organisation in greater depth than previous courses. Candidates will also practise various rigging techniques, including work position, fall arrest, abseiling, and halting, as well as advanced rescue and team exercises.
This course will prepare delegates for site supervision of rope access work projects. Candidates will be able to demonstrate advanced rescue and rigging techniques, as well as in-depth knowledge of techniques, equipment use, and limitations.
Candidates must have at least 12 months and 1000 hours of experience as a Level 2 technician, as well as a valid first aid certificate. They must also be familiar with relevant work techniques and legislation.
Benefits of taking the course
There are several benefits to being IRATA rope access certified. These include:
- A globally recognised qualification
As previously mentioned in this blog post, the IRATA Rope Access certification is a globally recognised qualification. IRATA is a prominent leader in the rope access industry, providing courses to delegates across 50 countries across the globe. It is recognised for its quality, high standards, and reliability, which in turn boosts the reputation of IRATA-certified technicians and member companies.
- Training programmes tailored to the highest safety standards
This course gives delegates both practical and theoretical knowledge of the highest possible safety standards in the rope access industry. Taking an IRATA course ensures that technicians are well-versed in the safest methods of working at heights, significantly lowering the risk of accidents and injuries.
- Access numerous job opportunities specific to IRATA technicians
Many rope access companies will only hire technicians who have an IRATA certification due to the complexity of their processes and their value of safety. Therefore, by increasing confidence in your professional abilities, completing an IRATA course broadens your employment and career advancement opportunities.
- Continuous professional development
IRATA requires technicians to recertify every three years to ensure that their skills and knowledge are current with the latest industry techniques, regardless of their level. This means that candidates at all levels have the opportunity to develop new skills and advance their careers.
